Please sync sylpheed (2.7.1-1) from Debian unstable.
It builds fine with a karmic pbuilder (see also build log https://edge.launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive/backports/+build/1164274/+files/buildlog_ubuntu-karmic-i386.sylpheed_2.7.1-1~ppa1_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz)
No local change on Ubuntu version.
