Bug Description

I run Jaunty 64bit with backports with desktop effects enabled.
Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller with
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" (the default configuration caused snow
and other screen-noise). It works smoothly now.
I have lockscreen and switch user disabled.
There is a logout button on toolbar from "add to panel".

When I click the logout button, both logout and switch user appear in the menu
(I have the other power management options like suspend and hibernate and reboot
and shutdown disabled, and they are not in the menu, as we want it in the computer lab).
I'd rather not have switch user there either. It is disabled but stays on the menu.

When I click switch user X freezes, the screen blanks, I cannot
even switch to a terminal.

I can ssh in and restart gdm.

Attached some reports.

0 jan@muizenberg:~$lspci|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Note I use UXA not EXA as the default was not stable,
I had snowy windows shop up erratically.

I'm still wondering how to just not have the switch user option
visible to click on for users at all.

regards,
Jan

Hi Jan,

There were a number of freeze bugs in Jaunty that affected UXA (and some for EXA as well). These issues have pretty much been entirely sorted out in the versions we have in karmic. Most of the fixes were to kernel code that can't easily be backported to jaunty.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure you'll find this issue gone when you upgrade to karmic so I'm going to close the bug. If you do run into freezes again, note that there are some troubleshooting guidelines available at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/ for this class of bug that you should follow in filing a bug report.
