Bug Description

Binary package hint: gscan2pdf

gscan2pdf breaks the page vertically in gray mode, but not in colour mode. Other file formats are fine in both gray and colour. I have tried all modes from libsane-perl to scanadf with the same result.

I am attaching a two page scan of the same document; one in colour and the other gray.

This is a Karmic issue - it works properly in Jaunty. I recall Intrepid had the same issue. My scanner is and HP officeJet 4215.

If the scanimage and scanadf frontends in gscan2pdf produce this result, too, then the bug is either in sane, or more likely in the backend. Are you using HPLIP?

Yes, HPLIP. I tried the same thing using the Xane image scanning program and it produced the pdf correctly. I am attaching the result.

When you did the two scans with gscan2pdf, did the black and white
scan look OK in the image view in gscan2pdf (i.e. the scan itself was
OK, but the PDF not), or was it broken up there too (i.e the scan
itself was not OK)?

Yes, it was fine. It also saved properly to all other formats, including PostScript.

I have Acrobat installed as well as Evince and both show the same result. I find it odd that if I set it to colour, there aren't any issues. The problem with using colour is that the documents are far heavier to email.

I compared all the dependencies and the preferences with the Jaunty version (which works perfectly) and as far as I can tell, they are identical.

I'm glad this is no longer a problem - but just for my interest - what was going on?

After a shutdown issue broke my Karmic installation (bug 414034) I used the Gparted live cd to reformat my Karmic partition and reinstalled it. Gscan2pdf is working properly now in grayscale mode.
