A reasonable expectation. Not a complete substitute, but touching the power button should bring up the logout dialogue.

Any thoughts on if adding the Lock/Logout widget somewhere would be the right answer?

The planned battery widget gives access to suspend/hibernate. A lock
widget might make sense on the panel.

As a temporary workaround I've added the battery and the lock/logout widgets. But since my 1 1/2 year old son likes to press the power button when he wants attention, a logout dialog would be very nice, instead of immediate shutdown. Even suspend as the default action for the power button would be nice.
