Bug Description

I have a 24 pixels wide, left-aligned bar. Indicator-applet envelope is shown only partially, though it could fit.

Thanks for your feedback but we only support horizontal panels in Karmic.

I've just upgraded to Lucid and find the indicator applet does not re-orientate for a vertical side panel. The power icon disappears. I'm running Lucid desktop Beta 1 on my netbook. I want to use side panels of 24 pixels to maximise my 576 pixel vertical screen real-estate for applications.

Please fix

This isn't exactly an edge case. It's obviously possible (see the Red Hat notification area). You mentioned it wouldn't be fixed in Karmic, but what about Lucid?

Hello Indicator Applet Developers,
I'm posting to try and persuade you to change your mind about the lack of indicator applet vertical orientation from being a wish to being essential.

The Ubuntu desktop appearance is very important. If a user takes advantage of the Gnome Panel properties and re-orientates his Panels to the vertical, the indicator applet currently does not follow. It is immediately obvious that the Power Icon disappears, this causes a desktop functional issue. The only way to power down the PC is to press the hardware power button.

A fix would be to provide orientation properties for the Indicator Applet in the right mouse button menu.

The preferred fix would be to link the Indicator Applet orientation automatically to the Gnome Panel.

A workaround would be to separate the social account icon from the power icon. When the Gnome panel was orientated vertically it would not disappear, but be underneath the remaining half of the Social Account Icon.

Let me add my voice to the 'essential' group, I'd suggest a 'properties' dialog that allows at least +90, -90, 0 rotation; I'll even try to code it for you at some stage :)

If gnome supports vertical panels then this applet should do this too.

I'm marking this bug as a dup of Bug #498182 , which has been set to triaged ,unlike this bug which had been initially marked as a "wont fix" .
Since ,there are better chances of Bug 498182 getting fixed

Further this is actually a dup of Bug #410254 , which has also been duped to Bug #498182
