I've used this system with debian before and I know that when PREEMPT is off in the kernel, the system is very stable.

I'm in the process of re-compiling the kernel without PREEMPT. I'm not sure if that will fix this issue.

Just to expand this ...

I got the nvidia drivers from nvidia.com and the latest kernel sources from kernel.org

used make-kpkg.sh to create a new kernel (make-kpkg.sh is a front-end to make-kpkg: http://lems.kiskeyix.org/toolbox/?f=make-kpkg.sh)

after that, the system hasn't hang/hiccup/crashed ever. evertying is rock solid.

I think we can safely assume this is an oddity.
