Wow, there is nothing that I can think of in desktop-switcher that could cause this problem. The code that executes to display the window is really, really simple. My only wonder is if it was an xorg issue with the launcher being restarted at the same time as desktop-switcher's window is being shown. Could you please see if this still happens on a fully updated Karmic system. Marking as incomplete until then.

when trying to switch desktops it either crashes or it shows netbook-remix along with classic panels.
On an eeepc 1000H. Is there a way to reset the desktop mode manual?
I started a guest session and there everything was ok.

I can confirm this. I upgraded 17th Oct. and the problem persists. My hardware is Dell Inspiron Mini 910.

I receive this message when I try to change it on my Acer Aspire One:

Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Could not send message to GConf daemon: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus))

I have an empty application bar on the bottom of my screen and a launcher bar that has Applications, Places, System on the top.. typical of the normal Gnome UI, not the Netbook Remix UI. But the home screen interface does load on top of the desktop and the system thinks it is in Netbook UI.
