Bug Description

hen you double click on i.e. an OpenOffice.org document, OpenOffice.org is started as it should. Since OpenOffice.org takes a few moments to load it would be great to have some visual feedback with the mouse pointer saying "it is started", maybe a busy-cursor for a short while, but can still do other things on the desktop. As for now I always look at my hard disk diode to see if the double-click was recognized.

It is not a good idea to have a sound feedback when you bring the computer to the public library.

Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 00:28:35 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu v9.04

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Judging from your description, I am going to assign this bug to the openoffice.org package in hopes that it will have a faster response. If you believe that I have chosen the wrong package, please change your bug to the correct one. Good luck on getting it fixed!

This entry would have probably made a good hundred paper cuts bug. https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts

Adil Arif: I agree with the paper cuts bug option...

It is by design all document, so it is not just Open Office.

There is also another minor bug in the same manner:

When you start nautilus from the places menu, sometimes when you double click a folder, you need to do this twice.

i.e. Open places / Home Folder
you have a folder in it called X, and double click it

Sometimes this doesn't respond to the first double click. You can click once in the window before the double click to have this working.

Is it just to report this kind of bugs in the "One Hundred Paper Cuts"?

nautilus does display a busy cursor while applications are starting so maybe openoffice is not using startup notification correclty

I must agree with Sebastien that nautilus and evince (that I have tested) do use that busy cursor. I wouldn't report this but to the 100 paper cuts now because they have already chosen them for this Ubuntu release. Since it seems that it the 100 paper cuts was successful they may do it for the 10.04 release. If David Siegal does do it again, then I really recommend submitting this bug.

What do they use to cause the busy cursor to come up? I doubt I will ever see it in any case since it takes well under a second before the OOo splash comes up for me and total load time of OOo is under 2 seconds for me.

Chris: Well maybe a much faster computer can put up the splash so fast, but have you ever thought of people loving the 10" netbook computers. I'm running a 1.6 GHz Asus EEE with a real harddisk, but others are using SSD. It's slower, much like a USB stick.

There are many files on my harddisk too. Windows does this issue in an excellent way, but I don't like Windows for other reasons.

Elaborating on why your system is so slow did not solve the basic reason I set the bug to incomplete, which was how do the other Gnome apps cause the cursor to change? OOo already puts up a splash screen as soon as it begins to start, to do anything before that would require nautilus or whatever else launches it to do it.

Chris: Greetings from the "Sunshine State" ;). Upon double clicking on a pdf, jpg image, or a .mpeg movie on my computer there is a busy cursor signal that appears until the program responsible for that particular file type is loaded. A good idea for further integration would be to show that same busy cursor for OpenOffice.org file types until either the splash screen (during cold boot) or the program (during warm boot) appears. On your computer you say that it takes less then 2 seconds for the splash screen to show up, so it would seem appropriate for a busy cursor to show in order for you to know that the computer registered your clicks.

Changing the status to New is pointless, if someone did provide the needed information it would go from Incomplete to Confirmed or Triaged not back to New.

If you have nothing useful to add DO NOT TOUCH THE STATUS!

It appears that it just needs a change in the .desktop file to change the StartupNotify to true.

Wow, I just tested OOo a netbook, I didn't realize that they were that hideously slow, it takes over 5 seconds for it to just display the splash screen, by comparison on a regular laptop OOo starts and is ready to use in under 2 seconds.

This is being discussed on the ooo-build developer list at the moment. It will likely be fixed soon if it wasn't done for an important reason.

It's not just a problem with OpenOffice.org though. I've experienced this problem with VLC Media Player as well. I posted about this at this (possible) duplicate bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/adept/+bug/396253

There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.
