not reproduced with Inkscape rev22011 on OS X 10.5.8 (does that still count as 'latest svn' - current is rev22027?) - the 'Edit…' buttons in 'Stroke and Fill' dialog and Gradient Tool controls bar both open the 'Gradient Editor' window.

sorry my bad. Usually I have 2 monitors on my computer. In this case only one. Perhaps the window remembers the last shown position. In my case was on the monitor that is now not connected.
The window opens not on the screen. I can have access to this window by ALT+SPACE to get the window system menu and the say move.
I update the description accordingly.

Did you test with other dialogs?
Bug #280593 reports the same kind of behavior with the Export dialog.
