Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

i install jaunty and upgraded to karmic today (karmic's installed gives me grub grief), so the system is pretty clean, and i have not altered any settings related to audio/video.

i tried to play an ogg video file big_buck_bunny_1080p_stereo.ogg from blender.org. it struggles to play a few frames, and then i get a dialog
"An error occurred
Disconnected: Connection terminated"

i see the following in xsession-errors,
** Message: Error: Disconnected: Connection terminated
pulsesink.c(266): gst_pulsering_is_dead (): /GstPlayBin2:play/GstPlaySink:playsink0/GstBin:abin/GstBin:audiosinkbin/GstGConfAudioSink:audio-sink/GstBin:bin5/GstAutoAudioSink:autoaudiosink1/GstPulseSink:autoaudiosink1-actual-sink-pulse
(whole log attached).

when i disable my RV635 audio device [Radeon HD 3600 series] in the sound preferences then i get sound from totem. i guess pulse is trying to output sound over hdmi (though i am using DVI for my monitor)

I initially got this error on my laptop (DELL inspiron mini 1012) when testing the Maverick RC, but I guessed that it was related to an Intel video driver issue. Upon installing Maverick on my desktop, the audio is completely messed up. I get all sorts of errors in /var/log messages such as:

--
Oct 11 02:05:05 lyria kernel: [ 1966.899256] 2:1:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x1
--
or a barrage of these (if i don't put tsched=0 in the default.pa config)
Oct 11 01:40:46 lyria pulseaudio[2103]: ratelimit.c: 5 events suppressed
--
A number of other issues related to audio also exist including audio playback in Banshee and volume controls being logarithmic instead of linear. I won't get into those details here, however.

The error is more common in high quality video files, but that may just be codec related. In any case, this was all working perfectly under Lucid (including on the inspiron mini).

Getting this error with most video files on my Acer Aspire One, since upgrading to 10.10 (from 10.04), occasionally the error takes a bit longer to appear but the video playback is always choppy, skipping frames, etc.

Additionally there is often no sound with the video files, and the 'disconnected' error is followed by:
pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated
pa_stream_writable_size() failed: Connection terminated

These video files previously worked fine under 10.04

This may help someone find the true cause of this bug, but I tried removing gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio and then installing gnome-alsa mixer and rebooting and the problem went away.

From here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9365153

sudo apt-get remove gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer
reboot
