Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Problem happens since upgrade to Evolution 2.27.5 (Ubuntu Karmic)

I had had an email, say <email address hidden> and an email alias account <email address hidden>, emails for both accounts were going into single imap account. In Evolution I had set up two email accounts, one, the default one is <email address hidden>, and second is the <email address hidden>, which had the receiving server set as NONE.

Then, when I was hitting the REPLY button on the incoming email which had TO:<email address hidden> Evolution was setting the correct outgoing account (<email address hidden>), and when I was hitting the REPLY on email which had TO:<email address hidden> Evolution was automatically setting the correct outgoing account to <email address hidden>.

Now, that doesn't happen, Evolution always sets the outgoing account to <email address hidden> and I had to switch the outgoing account manually.

the bug has been fixed upstream now, the change doesn't work on the lucid version of Ubuntu though so it will probably not be fixed in lucid unless somebody work on doing a similar change on the current version

Is it possible to have a ppa repository in this case ?

For us, it's a big problem in our company, we have upgraded all computers desktop from Jaunty to Karmic this morning. Now this make a lots of problems for all our employees, they have to choose one of our ten identities each time ...

Or do you have a solution to get an older version like 2.26 inside Karmic Koala ?

Thanks for your time and your help.

what would you use in the ppa there? the new version is not in lucid because it's a rewritte with quite some technologies changes so it would be a stability issue and not apply easily on karmic. if the logic used to work in jaunty it should be possible to write a change for 2.28 but it requires somebody having the issue and understanding the change and what needs to be done there

Ok, I understood.
There is a way to permit to go back in version 2.26 into Karmic, please ?

downgrading should be working but I didn't try, is selecting the email you want to use so much of an issue? in which cases is it buggy exactly?

For us it's a very big problem because we have a lots of identities and we need to reply multiples hundreds of emails every day.

Our administration staff manage multiples companies (partners in the same office) for multiples services (commercial, supports, recruitments etc), with one centralized IMAP account. Each company or service is stored in different folders.

Since many years, the good identity was directly preselected when we click on the "reply" button (by looking the "To" field of the message). Since the Karmic upgrade this morning, Evolution is now in 2.28, and there is no detection of the identity, it's directly the first identity created in Evolution.

Now, our staff need to select manually the identity, this take more time but it's not the worst. Imagine if someone forget to change the identity. A message could be badly replied under the wrong company or from the wrong service.

We need solve urgently this problem, by downgrading to 2.26. Can you explain me how to go back in 2.26 please, or give me a simple link on the web if there is to make this downgrade ?

Thanks a lots !

installing 2.26 on karmic will probably reveal to be non-trivial since it would require to downgrade the evolution-data-server stack too, I've no easy reply for your right now, the easiest might be to look at fixing the issue in 2.28

Ok... Thanks for your help Sebastien.

We prefer Evolution, but we will uses Mozilla Thunderbird while the fix come in Ubuntu Karmic (If this come a day in Karmic..).

The bug seems fixed in Fedora 13 since at least one month :
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=588833

Generally, we wait many months after a new version of Ubuntu to limit the risks (we have upgraded to Karmic this morning, out since 5 or 6 months now).

An appreciate feature in Ubuntu should be to ask the user before "upgrading" a package if there is regression bugs inside the product. This could prevent of theses kind of situation.

It could be a good idea to upgrade one box to test that everything you need is still working next time, we try as best to not break things between versions but we don't write all the softwares we distribute and bugs happen. The issue you raised has not been really flagged as a stopper until now likely because most users have one account or switch between ids not as often as you do.

The bug has been fixed in fedora because they use the new version which has all the technologies changes for GNOME3, the version had lot of code changes and low testing until now, Ubuntu didn't trust it to be a good choice to be ship an earlier unstable version in a lts now, it will be available next cycle and it would not be surprising to see a ppa or backports for it too...

@Sebastien Bacher:
Of course, I have tested all sensible things after upgrading the first computer (kernel, drivers, printer, scanners, fax, voip, etc). But I haven't tested all options of all applications, because, since Warty, I never see any regression bug in applications of Ubuntu.

I know you do your best, and I know it's not a simple task, we sincerely appreciate all your works, I don't blam you at all.

I have only suggested an appreciate feature to prevent theses kind of problem.

This bug was reported in August 2009, before the final release of Karmic Koala (November 2009).
May be it's possible while the dist-upgrading, to look in launchpad if there is regression bugs reported, and in this case to show the subject / links and to ask if we want to upgrade the package.

When I was on debian (before that Ubuntu exists), I remember the apt dist-upgrade command do this automatically for all critical bugs. This wasn't directly integrated in "apt" command, this was a plugin or another package added, but I don't remember the name. May be it's possible to do something similar, at least for the regression bugs and critical bugs ?

Tried this and seemed to work. But I had to update a few packages manually in Synaptic. You can find them by searching for packages marked with a gray status icon with an exclamation mark on it.
