Bug Description

I can't see any map in googleearth, a white "picture" replace the actual map images (as you can see in the attachment).
Something important : while the Medibuntu package was installed, I install the Google distribution of googleearth (which goes in /opt directory). This distribution worked fine (I could see the maps). But, at the same time so do the Medibuntu package ! So I tried to remove the Google package by deleting the googleearth directory in /opt. Then, the medibuntu package didn't work anymore.

Hi,

Thanks for your bug report. Since it works with a manually installed version, this is probably a packaging issue. I'll try to look into it.

Sorry, I made a mistake in my bug report. I thought the medibuntu package did work while the Google one was too. But it doesn't. I always see the white pictures.

Hi,
As Manal said, the problem is not due to the medibuntu package because the problem is the same with the google installator.
A bypass solution is to set fail-safe graphical mode ("utiliser le mode sans echecs" in french) in google earth options.

Same problem.

The ("utiliser le mode sans echecs" in french) in google earth options works bab. En redémarant le logiciel, la case ne reste pas cochée.

Remarque

----------

Google Earth n'a pas pu écrire
dans l'emplacement actuel du cache ou du fichier Mes Mes lieux préféres. Les valeurs seront définies de la valeur suivante

Chemin Mes lieux préférés: "/home/xxxx/.googleearth"
Chemin du cache : "/home/xxxx,/.googleearth/Cache

Farvil's workaround worked for me, I got rid of the white map. I am using the Medibuntu package in Karmic.

For information, here is my graphic card description from lspci :

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4600] (rev a3)

I'm using the nvidia-96 drivers.

Could you check that you have the correct permissions on googleearth's cache dir? ($HOME/.googleearth should be owned by your user, not root)

Fail-safe graphical mode works for me too.

I've got the same problems on my system. After installing with Google's own installer, it displays the warning, that it can't write to the cache and the settings directory:

"Google Earth konnte nicht in den aktuellen Speicherort der Datei im Cache oder in "Meine Orte" schreiben. Die Werte werden wie folgt festgelegt:
"Meine Orte"-Pfad: "/home/user/.googleearth"
Cache-Pfad: "/home/user/.googleearth/Cache""

No changes in the settings or in My Places are saved, they're gone on next program startup.
When I start Google Earth as root, the dir /root/.googleearth/ is created and the settings are saved correctly there.
The dir ~/.googleearth exits, belongs to my standard user and is writable.

Additionally: After I tried the medibuntu package (previous deinstallation of the Google version), no Image (earth, stars, whatever) is displayed in the Google Earth window.
