Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I am running current karmic i386 on an Asus Eee PC 900 (Intel 915 graphics). When I try to enable desktop effects via Settings->Appearance, I tries searching for drivers and then tells me that the desktop effects could not be enabled.

If I just run "compiz --replace", compiz works without problems.

I just tried again, it still does not work via the Appearance dialog. If I try it, I see this in my .xsession-errors file:

The last two lines appear over and over again.

If I run compiz manually (and kill the left-over metacity process), compiz still works without problems.

I just noticed the same problem on my Thinkpad X200 (Intel GMA4500MHD graphics), so I changed the title of the bug report.

This looks kind of like bug 389696 which is a problem with metacity telling the session manager to keep starting it over and over.

Hmm, the bug you linked is something about a battery warning, I think you mean Bug #389686. I experienced it some time ago, but then compiz could be enabled (metacity just kept running, which could be "fixed" by logging off and on again). Here, I cannot enable compiz in the first place.

By now, I managed to enable compiz permanently by entering it via gconf-editor. This is of course not for everyone :)

Actually this was a bug in gnome-appearance-properties and I fixed it a couple weeks ago in karmic so this problem should be gone now.

Changed in compiz (Ubuntu):
status: New → Fix Released

You have a different problem. Somehow your hardware acceleration is completely disabled.
