I'd find it immensely useful to have this feature available for source packages too; indeed that's essentially the only context in which I'm likely to use this feature.

The relevant work required to do this shouldn't be too hard. I'd like it done for 3.0, so I am tentatively scheduling it, but no promises are made just yet.
