Bug Description

Could not initialise the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.

Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-updates_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

We would love to help you with this problem but you need to include more information for us to be able to solve your problem. Could you please let us know whether or not you have been able to reproduce this problem.

Also what exactly did you do that led to this happening?

A little more information about exactly what version of Ubuntu you were running when this happened would be helpful.

Hi Shane,

This error first occurred when I took the computer with me to Canada and connected wirelessly to a friend's Router. The problem was repeatable and occurred each time that either Synaptic or Update Manager was run.

I have just now managed to clear the error by opening a Terminal session and entering :

sudo apt-get update

That seemed to download the package list and cleared the error.
