Bug Description

It appears that while doing a reboot (notably, this is all off the live cd) usplash does not appear until late in the process, where it seems to hit a "second stage" ( i noticed this on my laptop to, it seems to clear and start the log again)

It does however come up fine doing a shutdown

I can confirm this bug, but the problem appears during shutdown as well, not only during reboot.

I think the problem appears when you go into console mode (Ctrl-Alt-F1, for instance) at any time during your session.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot the computer, go into GDM, login into GNOME session. The GNOME desktop appears.
2. Go to console mode with Ctrl-Alt-F1. Login with your username & password.
3. Go into graphics mode with Alt-F7.
4. System -> Logout, and then Shutdown.

The Usplash doesn't appear until the "second stage".

Changed in usplash:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

I've realized that there's no need to go into console mode in order to reproduce the bug. I don't know exactly what is the starter of the problem. :/

Additionally, I would like to say that the problem not always appears.

I can confirm that the bug is still here with the new usplash 0.2-2. Sometimes the Usplash's first stage appears, but sometimes don't.

I've realized that there's a file called /sbin/usplash_down, which does not in the old 0.1-22 version.

That file seems do nothing: it's not called from /etc/init.d/usplash, and it seems not called from any of the usplash files:

ricardo@yuggoth:~ $ grep "usplash_down" `dpkg -L usplash`
ricardo@yuggoth:~ $

I wonder if this could be the origin of the problem.

I'm experiencing this bug too. Usplash used to appear early in the shutdown process, but now I only see it towards the end, just as Ricardo described.

I believe that this bug appeared when I did the 0.1-35 -> 0.2-1 usplash upgrade.
