Bug Description

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

In Karmic it looks like the flashplugin-nonfree does not use pulseaudio.
This will block sound from other programs using when playing a flash movie.

I can confirm this. It also happens on my 64bit box, latest karmic.

A related problem is that the padsp command does not work.

If you run 'padsp firefox-3.5' firefox never starts (the command hangs).

But this is a generic bug with padsp - it hangs no matter what program is run. I guess that if padsp would work, firefox start-up script could easily be changed to use padsp.

The problem with padsp _is_ firefox specific. And actually it is only firefox 3.5 that have this bug. If you start firefox 3.0 with padsp it starts just fine, and the sound output from flash goes through pulseaudio.

affects: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu) → pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

Hey, has there been any progress on this?

I first noticed this in Lucid, and it continues in Meerkat on my Dell Vostro Laptop with Intel HDA:

snd_pcm 89104 3 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec

The specifics of this bug for me are as follows:

Start any sound (for me it would be launching an mp3 file in Totem, for example).

Open up Firefox or Chrome and play a youtube video.

The youtube video start and plays with full sound, the mp3 file continues playing with full sound.

Start another application that plays sound (skype or any other number of applications. Any application started after flash starts in the browser will not play any sounds.

Kill npviewer.bin

Most sound streams that have been refusing to play will play simultaneously.

Rinse and repeat.

What is going on here? Is npviewer really exclusively locking up pulseaudio?

I am happy to help in any way possible to debug this. I just need pointers on where to look for logging infomation and such.

system:
Ubuntu 10.04 X86_64
flashplugin-nonfree

I have one of those screwy laptops with intel GPU on-die and nvidia GPU that will never ever work with linux, so this is the output for sound of lspci:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)
01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

Notice I have the Intel driver loaded.
