Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

I have downloaded email incoming wav files from the net, I have stored these in my personal folder and from there have installed these in Thunderbird as the default for incoming notification of mail.

However, on trying the said sound all I hear is a static buzz, I've Goggled this and found several sites where others have reported same issue.

These sites are several Months old in the information discussed and so of no value as to the rectification of the bug.

Has there been a download patch made available for solving this bug issue or is there a Thunderbird update which does same?

It is annoying to be doing things with my machine and not hear any incoming mail alerts, especially if these have to be replied to quickly.

I'm using Thunderbird on the latest Ubuntu 9.04 with all its updates installed, I like the look etc. of Thunderbird but if this bug can't be irradicated then I will revert back to Evolution.

Thank you for your bug report. Can you help us by answering a few questions:

Do these wav files play in another media player?

Can you try with some other wav files?

Does the option "Default system sound for new mail" work as expected?

Can you give us some more information on you computer hardware.

If you could post the urls of the wav files, and of the other sites where the issue was reported, that would also be very useful.

Thanks.

I've reverted back to using Evolution as the wav files now play on this
after some tinkering around.

Thanks anyway

This static buzz bug still exists in Ubuntu Karmic using Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23 (20090817).

Incoming mail event generates only static from all wave files tried - and from the default system sound too when that is selected as the notifier. These same files play properly in all other applications.

Strangely, Thunderbird played WAV files OK for a short time after it was installed. Could a major or minor 'upgrade' of Ubuntu have produced an unintended effect? Or, is this a bug in Thunderbird?

t54 has the exact problem I have, and the same operating system.
I really hope this problem can be fixed -- as I have tried all the same fixes as t54 and then some.

re posts #3, 4,& 5 above: Herewith is one of many WAV files that used to work in Thunderbird but now produce only static buzz

PS I see that Thunderbird v3 has now been released -but there is no deb file, and no script or compile instruction. Has anyone compiled it for karmic and tested to see if this bug still exists? If it is fixed, sharing simple compile instructions would be much appreciated.

I can confirm that this identical bug still exists with Thunderbird v3.01 running on karmic with all its latest updates as of this writing.
