Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I used pppoeconf in Ubuntu 9.04 as I did with earlier versions.

There was a bug in pppoeconf, that prevented me from using it:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rp-pppoe/+bug/275415

I relalized that it is possible to handle PPPoE connections from network-manager. I tried, but I couldn't make network-manager operational anymore. I tried renaming /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider and configuring /etc/network/interfaces with no success.

It seemed that network-manager was completely broken, since I couldn't setup regular LAN connection nor PPPoE.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release the Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

The same happened to me. I have installed the beta version of 9.10, but network manager could not connect via DSL pppoe, so I had to use pppoeconf. Now I tried to use updated network manager, but I am not sure if it is still buggy or remainders od pppoeconf modifications prevent its function.

Try deleting /etc/network/interfaces and reboot. You should get Network Manager running again.

i'm curious to hear if this actually works.
also strange that until today there is no mention of this anywhere in NM, and pppoeconf has a beautiful intelligent wizard, while NM offers pages of administrator-level information, where i only want to use the default settings offered by the pppoeconf wizard in more than 99% of the cases.

Unfortunately this is still a bug.
To use pppoe over wifi, you need to run pppoeconfig as the NetworkManager does not currently support it.
After running pppoeconfig and a reboot, it then causes NetworkManager to no longer work.
