Bug Description

Both when running live and after install/reboot using the beta Live-CD on my 16:9 laptop, I get a desktop in 1024x768, and only other choices are 800x600 and 640x480. But dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg finds the correct resolution (1440x900), sets it as default and the default nv driver handles it just fine.

I understand trying to play it safe, but why isn't it at least an allowed resolution to try after install? A beginner user can't be expected to know that kind of command either, and the desktop looks positively messed up in anything but the right size.

It is usually caused by the autoconfiguration script not giving the correct result. If you can give exact details on your setup, as well as results from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration, we could at least know how to make it much better.

Well, it's a laptop, Fujitsu Siemens Ammilo 3438G. It has a Nvidia GeForce Go 6800 card built in, PCI Express. The screen is 17" or thereabouts, widescreen, and it wants 1440x900 as resolution.

What from that page is up-to-date information, and which of it do you need? Do I really have to exit all, stop GDM and run a reconfigure? From what I remember, a full reconfigure usually asks questions I can't answer... so I have to abort. However, the -phigh one has already found the correct solution, so maybe I can just attach output from those commands?

I'll do it, just tell me what is important and how.
