Bug Description

I noticed that synclinet from synaptics package does not work anymore. The synclient -l shows all the options. I can change any option I want using synclient opt=val. Consecutive synclinet -l shows modified settings but the settings is not applied
actually. Touchpad behavior does not change.

I can't reproduce the problem here.

Can you still reproduce the problem with the latest updates?

but 2 finger tap still does not act as middle button..

1.1.2-1ubuntu6 does do something for me:

~ $ synclient -l|grep padOff
    TouchpadOff = 0 (taps and scrolling annoy me)
~ $ synclient TouchpadOff=2
~ $ synclient -l|grep padOff
    TouchpadOff = 2 (taps and scrolling all gone)

Im affected since a few hours by this problem. Don't know why this happened.
By playing a bit with the variable "TouchpadOff" I found out that the values seem to apply for a few seconds and are "overwritten" or somethyng by another process.
Not so long ago I had a similar conflict with "syndaemon -i 3 -d -t -K" that syndaemon could not deactivate the tapping for the specified 3 seconds but i could solve it by deactivating the option "lock mousepad when typing" at Mouse-Configuration -> Touchpad (take in mind that the names of the options may differ because i not use an english system).

I could solve the problem by take some changes of the "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi" from the "/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/11-x11-synaptics.fdi"

The one in /etc/... now looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
 <device>
   <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.touchpad">
 <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">synaptics</merge>
 <merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">On</merge>

 ... some parameters to configure Touchpad behavior ...

   </match>
 </device>
</deviceinfo>

Yesterday I still had "UTF-8" as encoding and "true" instead of "On" in the SHMConfig-line.

But I wonder if these things were really the cause of the problem.

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

It looks like the current developement version of Ubuntu works OK for me. But now, I'm using XFCE instead of Gnome. This could be related. I have Gnome no more so I am unable to check whether the bug disappeared also with Gnome.
