apt-get should search for near misses when a package is not found

Bug Description

when I type
  apt-get install xyz
which isn't actually called package I should get something like
  E: Couldn't find package xyz
  Did you mean
  libxyz-1.3
  libxyz-dev

Description: Ubuntu 8.10

This functionality is already available when a user types a command that isn't not installed, but this is not useful for installing libraries.

This functionality exists in aptitude.

However if you feel strongly about it may I suggest you file a bug upstream.

Given that all active developers read both bug trackers, duplicating bugs to Debian is not really useful. Anyway, if someone knows the algorithms and wants to write a patch, please do so. I really do not need this, and it is not very fast
