These seems like the relevant lines from VarLogDistupgra deTermlog:
Merging changes into the new version smb.conf' and sort them out manually. smb.conf. ucf-new' has a record of the failed merge of the configuration file.

Not sure if this is a bug or not. There isn't always a sensible silent solution when dealing with configuration files.
