These seems like the relevant lines from VarLogDistupgradeTermlog:

Merging changes into the new version
Conflicts found! Please edit `/etc/samba/smb.conf' and sort them out manually.
The file `/etc/samba/smb.conf.ucf-new' has a record of the failed merge of the configuration file.

Not sure if this is a bug or not. There isn't always a sensible silent solution when dealing with configuration files.

Probably not a bug. You should edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and sort conflicts out manually. In doubt, please copy a fresh version from /usr/share/samba. Please reopen if the issue persists.
