Bug Description

Installed Karmic Alpha 3 on my Dell Inspiron 6400 with Intel 945GM graphics and noticed screen flickering. Especially when i move my finger over touchpad. It was so disturbing that I had to return back to Jaunty with the kernel 2.6.30.
Any suggestions how to fix the Karmic issue?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Judging from your description, I am going to assign this bug to the xserver-xorg-video-intel package in hopes that it will have a faster response. If you believe that I have chosen the wrong package, please change your bug to the correct one.

This bug may be a duplicate of #404528, I will allow the package maintainer to decide. Good luck getting this bug fixed!

For xorg-related bugs there are a number of logs that we need to even get started. Most importantly, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if any), output of `dmesg`, and the output of `lspci -vvnn`. The easiest way to upload this and some more relevant information is to run the command `apport-collect 404533` from Karmic. The information which is uploaded this way is roughly the same as if you had filed this bug with the command `ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-intel`.

Same problem here, was fine until Update Manager was run a few days ago. Now have a constant flicking, generally when using the touchpad to navigate menus or scroll webpages. Makes Ubuntu virtually unusable.

I've used apport-collect as advised to provide all files needed. As I can't use my laptop in this state, I'm reverting to a different distro so cannot provide any further information from now on. Hopefully the files submitted are enough to identify the cause.

Possibly a duplicate of bug 412492. There should be a new kernel to test at that bug report soon.

I have been able to work around this issue with the 'nomodeset' flag:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
replace splash with nomodeset
save
sudo update-grub

On reboot the flickering stops. This might help others afflicted by this annoying issue.

The linked duplicate bug is almost certainly the same thing. It is identical in symptoms and cause to what I was experiencing.
