some applications (QT based??) cause display corruption in gnome

Sometimes (but not every time) I get display corruption when running either virtualbox or calibre.
my display will get very dim and the color resolution seems to drop to 16 colors. my display is unusable.

if I close the program or bring another window to the foreground the display goes back to normal.
Someone else suggested it may be related to using QT libraries in gnome.

I am experiencing the same issue. It seems to happen with QT apps, like you said. I experienced it while running the QT (default) frontend to VirtualBox as well as wile running UNetbootin. The colors on the whole screen seem to become inverted -- the white parts turn black, the black parts turn white, etc. Like you said, it returns to normal when focus is removed from the affected application.

I am also using Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) under the Gnome environment.

WORKAROUND: Turning "Visual Effects" on (from "None" to "Normal") in the Appearance Preferences seems to get rid of this problem.

By the way, I am using the radeon drivers. This may be the source of the problem.

I am using the regular drivers.
I also had some corruption in VLC last week. I have not had any issues for a while though.
virtualbox seems to be OK now.

Can you try to reproduce this issue in latest Ubuntu Karmic version or up to date?

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
