pidgin crashes whenever my internet is connected

I have just loaded Ubuntu 9.04 he Jaunty Jackalope - released in April 2009.
Whenever my internet connection is on and i select Pidgin messenger, the pidgin starts and crashes before i enter my password. However it works whenever the internet connection is closed. I am having to shut down my internet connection everytime i want to start pidgin. after starting pidgin i start my internet. Also i was logging on to MSN messenger and Gtalk when the crash used to happen.
