Bug Description

Since upgrade to Ubuntu Studio 9.04 x64 (clean install) Synaptic, add/remove programs, and apt-get has crashed (full computer freeze) every time in gnome prior to nvidia driver install and has forced me to upgrade/install ALL of my packages in failsafe terminal session.
After successful initial upgrade and also after the nvidia driver was installed, package managers would sometimes work, still forcing me to mostly use the failsafe terminal for most package installs. This crash happened while attempting to install package "sun-java6-source" from failsafe terminal. The package "sun-java6-doc" errored, but didn't crash the system.

Other crashes occured during "flashplugin-installer" and various other packages. Crashes aren't limited to, but do always occur if firefox is running.

from the attached log file:

This package is an installer package, it does not actually contain the
JDK documentation. You will need to go download one of the
archives:

    jdk-6u10-docs.zip jdk-6u10-docs-ja.zip

(choose the non-update version if this is the first installation).
Please visit

    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/

now and download. The file should be owned by root.root and be copied
to /tmp.

[Press RETURN to try again, 'no' + RETURN to abort] no
Abort installation of JDK documentation

This bug report mentions the installer having problems with several other unrelated packages. Whatever those errors might be they are likely different than the one highlighted above in comment #3. If they still occur, then perhaps additional bugs should be filed? (assigned to the appropriate package)
