desktop opens totally blank just a dark page

dont have my systems or places or application tabs on top of page. cant open up a terminal or synptic package. Must have something to do with evolution but i cant access it. Evolution email was not letting me do anything. said that my server was unrecognised . it kept coming up shaw ,ca instead of shaw.ca couldn't reset it so i deleted the files and reloaded them something happened and now when i start the computer it is totally blank. have to hit buttons till i get a desktop background save box and then hit help till i can get to a page that i can access any information. lets have fun with this one. thank you
