Bug Description

I had a problem with the upload/download process in a web navigator. There is no spread information (status bar or percentage). I'm heading for the amazonian forest (for real) in one week with limited time connection (and 56k) so it would be really usefull to feel the upload time. Thanks for all.
I think it's a bit different from the bug 330769, because i'm hoping for status informations in the web navigator interface.

Hi broussaille! I hope you have a great adventure in the amazonian forest, that sounds amazing. I think when you download a file from the web, the browser itself gives you a progress indicator. We should definitely add a progress indicator for uploads, that would be useful.

Moving this away from the w17 milestone, new files ui first, then we can start work on a snazzy uploader with progress bar stuff.

I'm using the Chromium browser (available from Software-Center). Chromium shows the progress of the upload in percent in the lower right corner of the window. However, I'm hoping for an advanced upload progress-bar in U1. For examples like the ones in GMail when you drop a file into the attachement area. Of course, the upload progress bar should not use Flash. There are solution in HTML/JavaScript out there, e.g. http://sourceforge.net/projects/uber-uploader/ . The current "progress bar" in U1 does not inform about the progress, it's merely an animated image. On the other hand it may well be that a progress bar is considered as "distracting". As far as I know this is the reason why there is no information about ongoing activities in U1 on the Ubuntu desktop which commonly leads to only partly uploaded files because users shutdown the system and do not wait for an upload to finish.
