Bug Description

The OpenOffice.org install from apt/synaptic freezes on the configuration of the mailmerge component. On the first python script, to be exact. The computer will lock up and needs to be forcibly rebooted, afterward dpkg will be corrupted and a clean/purge does not fix.

Deleted ~/.openoffice/, but other files get messed up, as well.

I've noticed that this bug seems to affect me in Ubuntu Studio 9.04, but not
Ubuntu 9.04. I have since moved back to the standard desktop version of
Ubuntu and have not experienced the same since.

after a bit of googling, it looks like a problem with realtime kernel
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-rt/+bug/368570
that would also explain why it works in Ubuntu but not in Studio. haven't tried installing with generic kernel yet, i'l give it a try and see how it works out (although i don't know how to get generic kernel with broken synaptic...)
they say that openoffice doesn't work with realtime kernel, but if i could fix at least the update manager...
also some guy on ubuntu forums has the same problem
