X crashes on start with intel driver

Bug Description
On X startup, gdm begins to load and then vertical lines in different shades of green and blue appear. The mouse and keyboard are not responsive. Here is a dump from a screen session running startx:

I am also having the same problem.
Software: Gentoo Linux x86, kernel 2.6.30-gentoo-r3, xorg-server 1.6.2-r1, libdrm 2.4.12, xf86-video-intel 2.7.99.01.
Hardware: Packard Bell EasyNote BU45, Core 2 Duo T5200, Intel GMA950.
