Apparently, reinstalling the xulrunner package did not work. Sometimes Firefox profiles can become corrupt. Could you please try this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not need to delete your old profile to test.

if "trying with a new profile " includes the steps already undertaken in the above linked question - ie. renaming .mozilla directory and having FF create a new one, i have already tried that. if not can you point me to a desciption of what you mean?

yes it was, but now i've since given up and reinstalled jaunty in a VM under virtualbox where i run firefox 3.5 as shiretoko and have removed my native jaunty install where this problem existed, and here this problem has gone away.
