Bug Description

Having enjoyed trialling the previous 8.10 LiveCD version without any problems, I decided to do the same with the latest 9.04 LiveCD version on the same laptop, this being an Intel i440BX based Compaq Armada E500 (500 MHz) with 512MB RAM & Windows XP Home installed on the 40GB single partition.
Unfortunately, it didn't take long for things to go wrong. Problems start as soon as hardware drivers are loaded, sometimes the progress bar just stops about 10% along (nothing happens after that - screen frozen/CTRL-ALT-DELETE ignored). On a couple of occasions, one of the following errors is displayed:

*Loading hardware drivers...
udevd-event[2839]: '/sbin/modprobe -b pci:v00001931d0000000Csv00000000sd00000000
bc02sc80i00 ' abnormal exit
udevd-event[2320]: '/sbin/modprobe -b pci:v000015Dd00001978sv00000E11sd0000B112
bc04sc01i00 ' abnormal exit
udevd-event[2847]: 'path-id/devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input6/mouse1'
abnormal exit
Segmentation fault (Hangs at this point)

The only other error I saw displayed was as follows:

*Loading hardware drivers...
udevd-event[2835]: '/sbin/modprobe -b pci:v00001931d0000000Csv00000000sd00000000
bc02sc80i00 ' abnormal exit
udevd-event[2843]: 'nm-modem-probe --delay 3000 --export /dev/.tmp-char-249:0'
abnormal exit
udevd-event[2319]: '/sbin/modprobe -b pci:v0000125Dd00001978sv00000E11sd0000B112
bc04sc01i00' abnormal exit
Segmentation fault (Hangs at this point)

I hope the above information can help discover what has changed since 8.10 (worked 100%). Shame, I was so looking forward to another good test-run :(

Many thanks,
Nigel R. Taggart

I "enjoyed" the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 5000e ( Intel P3 600 MHz, 384 MB RAM ) with 9.04 LiveCD.
I have had no trouble with 7.10 and 8.04.2 LiveCD's.
I tried 9.10 alpha 4 LiveCD and it boots fine.
This lets me think the 2.6.28 kernel may be guilty.

Hoping it can help...

Had same problem on Compaq Armada E-500, 256 MB RAM and Gateway 9300 solo, 288 MB. Could not load 9.04 Ubuntu, Crunchbang Linux 9.04 Lite. Had to stay with 8.10 and upgrade to 9.04, to 9.10. To tell you the truth I don't know why I ever left 8.10-loaded great, ran great on both laptops. Found by removing games, cards, open office after installing everything ran even better. I don't know why everything is so heavily loaded with garbage the average user never uses on the live CD. I'd love to try Mint 7 but don't currently have the ram to do so. One thing I'm totally pissed about-can't blank or burn CD's on either laptop. Get RLIMIT_MEMLOCK, and not one thread in Google can explain simply in non-geek how the hell to correct the situation. HELP!

Hi Nigel,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 399589

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
