Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups-pdf

Marked to install cups-pdf in Synaptic. Applied changes. Stalled at "Setting up cups-pdf (2.5.0-1ubuntu1) ..."

Killed the pid of Synaptic's install window (which also killed synaptic). Found dpkg hung as well, and killed it.

Tried 'dpkg --configure -a' from the terminal; and, that too stalled.

Purged cups-pdf and found PDF still in System > Administration > Printing. I had enabled it at some point, and now it will not let me disable it, even with 'sudo system-config-printer'. A further 'sudo aptitude install cups-pdf' also stalled at the same place, after hitting Ctrl-C it tried to recover automatically and stalled again, a second Ctrl-C let it end itself. AppArmor(?) generated a crash report for cups-pdf - attached.

I found the following in my /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/kern.log:
Jul 14 16:40:37 dereksbox kernel: [137598.360157] type=1503 audit(1247604037.434:11): operation="inode_permission" requested_mask="w::" denied_mask="w::" fsuid=0 name="/dev/ttyUSB0" pid=21275 profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd"

Forgot to mention, /dev/ttyUSB[0-4] is how my Verizon USB727 Wireless Broadband modem is detected by the system.

What is your Ubuntu version? Running this from terminal might also be helpful:
apport-collect -p cups-pdf 399481 (it will add more technical details to this bug report)

I am running Ubuntu 9.04; however, I believe this problem occurred prior to a re-install. Since then, I have had no need to install it, as the functionality is built-in to cups by printing to a file and selecting PDF as the 'Output format'. This entire package seems to be a duplication of existing functionality.

Actually, what you're seeing is GTK2 and QT having recently acquired printing management facilities. Their option to print to PDF directly produces the files without the need for CUPS.
