cups-pdf will not install properly

Bug Description
Binary package hint: cups-pdf
Marked to install cups-pdf in Synaptic. Applied changes. Stalled at "Setting up cups-pdf (2.5.0-1ubuntu1) ..."
Killed the pid of Synaptic's install window (which also killed synaptic). Found dpkg hung as well, and killed it.
Tried 'dpkg --configure -a' from the terminal; and, that too stalled.
Purged cups-pdf and found PDF still in System > Administration > Printing. I had enabled it at some point, and now it will not let me disable it, even with 'sudo system-

Forgot to mention, /dev/ttyUSB[0-4] is how my Verizon USB727 Wireless Broadband modem is detected by the system.
