Bug Description

I open the menu, go to places and click on my bookmark for a samba share.

A error appears "Could not open location 'smb://servername/'
No application is registered as handling this file

then I go into nautilus and click on the very bookmark in the left side and it works like a charm

I tried to delete the bookmark and recreate, nothing helps

Every single time on my desktop

* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
It takes a samba-server and an ubuntu client, that has a bookmark pointing to "smb://yourserver/"

* What ubuntu version do you use?
Release: 9.04

the specific steps you describe are not really specific or clear, could you have clear items, ie
* open a smb location
* use the add bookmark entry
* open the bookmark
get an error

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

This is not an issue an average user faces,Samba use is more for advanced users. And samba is not a part of the default install.Hence not a papercut.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.

You missed the point, the samba server does not need to be a local installation, it isn't in my case either. And to access a remote folder might not be the first thing you do as a average private user, but as an average business user you do. And remote folder access support is a default install feature of nautilus, isn't it?

So all I do:
* opening my nautilus (file-browser), point it to smb://myserver
* clicking Bookmarks/Add Bookmark
* closing nautilus
* clicking on the ubuntu logo in the upper left
* moving my mouse onto Places/Windows shares on myserver and clicking on it
getting the error
