Bug Description

Binary package hint: logcheck

This email is sent by logcheck. If you no longer wish to receive such mails, you can either deinstall the logcheck package or modify its configuration file (/etc/logcheck/logcheck.conf).

The word "mails" should be "mail". Mail is very commonly pluralized when it should not be. This is one of those cases.

If you would like context, consider these sentences.
I didn't receive my mails from the post office yet.
I sent you the mails yesterday.

These are the exact same situation. If you're a native English speaker, I would hope these make everything clear.

BTW, This is a pretty nice tool. If it weren't great, I wouldn't bother suggesting the improvement.

Please include the version of Ubuntu and the version of Logcheck.
And may I clarify that this happens when you get an email of a log file and it contains the word "mail"?

This is 9.04 64bit with all the updates.

That is exactly where it happens. But it contains "mails", it should contain "mail."

Could you check what version of Logcheck you have? Thanks in advance.

1.2.68

Actually, in the package description, it uses the word "mails" too. This should be "mail" as well.

logcheck: [mails] anomalies in the system logfiles to the administrator. In component main, is optional. Version 1.2.68 (jaunty), package size 65 kB, installed size 264 kB

Is there any intention of fixing this issue?

Sure there's an intention to fix this and it's easy to do so.
I'll forward the bug to Debian, where it should get fixed, and then will land in Ubuntu.

Regarding the package description: Why is "mails" wrong here? It's meant as verb here.
Description: mails anomalies in the system logfiles to the administrator
Logcheck helps spot problems and security violations in your logfiles
automatically and will send the results to you in e-mail.
 .
Logcheck was part of the Abacus Project of security tools, but this
 version has been rewritten.

I tried to explain why it's wrong above. If you don't see where it's obviously wrong then feel free to mark this "Won't Fix." I don't feel like arguing this point anymore.

As a side note, the grammar error is much like the errors found in data vs. datum.
