Bug Description

I just tried running the nouveau drivers on my PPC, since there's no 2D acceleration or proprietary drivers for this platform as far as I know. However, X.org does fail even to start with a SIGSEGV.

Hi Matteo,

We have an all new nouveau driver in Lucid. I really don't know whether or not it can be installed on PPC or if so, whether it should work. But since we've done so much work on this driver, I'm optimistic. Would you mind giving alpha-3 a spin on this hardware and see if this issue is resolved now?

If I recall correctly, Saturday it wasn't installable because http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/linux-backports-modules-nouveau-lucid-generic on PPC wasn't available (which is a dep of xserver-xorg-video-nouveau).

Anyway, I'll give it a try as soon as I get back home (I'm away for this full week, until Friday evening), and then I'll report back here my results. Thanks!

Hi Matteo,

We've actually gone ahead and disabled nouveau for ppc, as it seems it would need a ppc variant of linux-modules-backports which isn't currently available. So hopefully with alpha-3 it should be loading -nv. I'd love to see nouveau working with ppc some day, but I doubt it's something we're going to worry about at this point so I'm going to close out the bug as wontfix.

I can understand that. However, on Karmic the nouveau drivers were installable and working; I used them in place of the -nv ones for months and they did not crash. Moreover, I noticed a net improvement of the quality of the on-screen 2D rendering or, alas, gradients for example did not have that ugly alone that the -nv drivers produce.

So I can understand the wontfix, however keep in mind that there has been a stable period in karmic in which the powerpc nouveau drivers worked and worked very well.
