Bug Description

Hello,

just a quick note, I had a file that I could not deal with standard unace coming with Ubuntu but I had no trouble with the one coming from www.winace.com. From the debian changelog, I think both are the same program just not the same version.

The one I took from the website is still free software, so I think it should be in ubuntu.

Thanks

Thanks for your report. As we're now in "feature freeze", you have to ask for an UVF exception in order to see unace updated. Please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/UVFStatus

Ok I will try like that.
I cannot attach much, as the file is in a binary form, there is no real diff to do ..
But at nothing should depend on unance, I guess it would be safe to update it (correct me if I'm wrong).

Version is 2.5 vs '1.2b-3' for debian or ubuntu.

iirc the new versions had a license change which made the package not freely redistributable... but I have to take a look again so I may be wrong

Here is the new license :

Linux unace is provided free, "as-is". You may freely copy the program.
Distribution is permitted within this original package only.

"within this original package only" IMHO means that we can't put the binaries into a deb package but must use their tarball

Oh I hoped it could be put in a deb but with the original files, I don't much about these things ..
Sorry then to ask for something that I could have seen impossible :(

Licence problems, needs further investigation if we can really ship the newer version.

Hello,

here is the answer I got from Marcel Lemke (the guy behind unace). :

Hi,
we don't mind if you repackage it.
But please add a file stating you had our permission to do so.

Why was this rejected as we can do something legal ?

Edgy Eft is on the way and this still seems not to be dealt with. It is a pitty.

If you look at the debian mailing list, it says that the maintainer does not want to work with non-free software when he does not have too.

But maybe you or I can package it, and hope to jump as a MOTU for that if it's okay.

Why is not there any novelty about it? If it's not going to be fixed, it's better to remove unace package from repositories. It has become obsolete and useless

There is an unace-nonfree package in the repositories now, so I close this bug. Thanks whoever uploaded it.
