Bug Description

Binary package hint: yelp

The skype echo test reports that there is a "problem with audio playback".

I use a 9.04 desktop i386 ubuntu jaunty jackalope OS. This I chose to enable me to use skype.

The audio and streaming works on the internet on other applications, but seems to be of no avail on the skype application.

Is there an updated Skype package as was mentioned for the 9.04 Ubuntu package?

As i subscribe to Skype, I am keen on using Skype. Could you help me configure and get it working ?

Thanking you.

Pradeep Thomas

Have you configured skype? I have Ubuntu 9.04 and Skype 2.0.0.72 and the same kernel version and it works just fine on my system. When you install skype on linux you have to go into the settings and make it use the right devices for sound. If you know what brand/model your sound card is I may be able to find which settings you need. Or you can just try them all till they work which is what I did.

Thanks Brian for your response,

I have changed the Operating System to 9.04, AMD64, and installed the
Skype 2.0.0.72, and tried the various settings for finding out the right
device for sound. On default it does not work. On Pulse - I can hear the
skype voice response, but my voice does not play back in the echo test.

I am not sure what sound card is used, I think it is on board the mother
board, and the mother board is a S - Series Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P
model. The rest of the write-up on the Mother board cover is:

nVidia Ge Force 6100/nForce 430/rev.1.0AM2+/PCI - EX1/Micro ATX 2DDR2
Dual-CH/HD Audio 10/100 Lan/2 SATA 3Gb/s/8 USB2.0

I hope I could communicate the necessary information you need.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond(cable company is being problematic...). Could you attach the output of lspci and dmesg?

in case you don't know how to do this just run the following two commands in a terminal and attach the resulting files.

dmesg > dmesg.txt
lspci > lspci.txt

Thanks,
Brian

I tried putting the commands on a terminal and pressed 'enter'. But
there are no files displayed.

assuming you didn't get any error messages and you didn't cd into another directory the two files should be in your home directory. If not if you can just run dmesg and lspci and copy the outputs into txt files.

  • dmesg text.odt Edit (42.2 KiB, application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text; name="dmesg text.odt")
  • Lspci text.odt Edit (21.1 KiB, application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text; name="Lspci text.odt")

Dear Brian,

I am attaching the mesg and lspci text files obtained as you instructed.
I copied them into the open office document. Hope this will be good
enough for you to trouble shoot.

Thanks

Maybe try checking this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AudioCapture
If your mic isn't plugged into the back microphone port you will have to change the input source under the options tab to front mic. If that doesn't help can you record audio from any other programs?

Thanks Brian,

I tried what you said, somewhere it worked for a a while, after I did
the front Mic switch you mentioned. But it has not been consistent, the
settings change by themselves, and the mic gets muted automatically and
the settings change and on second try shows "Problems with Audio
playback".

I have been able to use this on the Skype setup in windows on the same
PC without problems. So it does not seem to be the mic problem.

Looking forward to switching over to ubuntu.

The article was helpful.

Will keep trying, hope to get it right. If you have any insights do let
me know.

Thanks

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
