FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.28-13-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Seems like the module had been compiled incorrectly or something caused the symbols not to match.

Found a work around to this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller
Sound output is working, have not tested recording, although that's not a priority. An update should be suddenly break the sound card drivers. This should be fixed as an update to the recent updates.

Oops. I meant, any updates should _not_ be breaking sound card drivers (or any drivers) when it had worked properly previously. :-)

Hi deww,
I have the same problem. I first thougt it was a problem with the alsa-driver-linuxant and hsfmodem and filed a bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/393095
When I install the linuxant driver my usb-devices don't work anymore. When I uninstall the linuxant driver, the sound system breaks...
Which workaround did you use from the ubuntu wiki? There are quite a lot on that page... Could you give me advice? Thank you!

Hi zasq, I used method A in the wiki which uses the module-assistant. Funny thing too, I did mess with the linuxant drivers previously.

I spoke a little too soon. The sound card drivers now does not work properly with suspend. Needs a restart. Blah.

zasq,
This is probably my final update on this. Seems like it was related to the linuxant driver. Out of desperation (and mainly because my /home partition is separate), I reinstalled and updated Ubuntu, and so far sound is still working correctly. I feel silly now. I probably look the part too. @_@

Hi deww,

thanks for all your answers! I don't think it's silly to try to find out what's happening!
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with a HDA ATI SB Card and Sigmatel Stac9200 chipset. What I did now is to compare the data of jaunty running with kernel 2.6.28-11-generic and with kernel 2.6.28-13-generic (see attachment). For that, I first uninstalled the alsa-driver-linuxant and hsfmodem in both and did

sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2

to restore the (sound-)system to a clean base. [The first thing I encountered doing this, was that in the newer 13-kernel linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.28-13-generic was not found!]

The specific problem I have is that all my 2.0-USB-DEVICES (printer, webcam, hdd) stop to work properly if I make any changes to the sound-system (modules?), no matter whether I install the alsa-driver-linuxant or recompile the snd-hda-intel module from alsa-source (as you proposed). Both things break up my usb-devices.

In the installation with the "older" 2.6.28-11-generic kernel I have to install alsa-driver-linuxant to get the microphone (skype) and modem (efax) to work. But with the driver for alsa and hsfmodem everything worked fine.

In the newer installation with the 2.6.28-13-generic kernel the soundcard isn't even recognized and the snd-hda-intel module is not installed. So: NO SOUND AT ALL. I noticed that in the newer installation the alsa is version 1.0.20, in the older (working) installation it's 1.0.19. Alsa libraries and utilities are version 1.0.18 in both installations. Maybe the alsa-driver should be downgraded to 1.0.19. but I don't know how to do that.

I am attaching a file containing the following INFORMATION (as requested in: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting?action=show&redirect=DebuggingSoundProblems) for BOTH KERNELS:

- the output of: aplayer -l
- the output of: find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd
- the output (audio device) of: lspci -v | less
- the links to the complete sound-information (alsa-info) of my system on alsa-project.org
- the output of: dmesg | grep hda
- the output of: modprobe snd

I hope this will help the developers to find a solution. I suppose we are not the only ones experiencing these problems...

Until then, I will have to start the system with different kernels depending on what I need to work with...

I forgot to add this information which might be useful:

I also followed the howto in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578 (pulseaudio fixes/Appendix A).

Instructions:
   1. Close all applications that may be accessing the sound card.
   2. Open the "PulseAudio Device Chooser" from Applications/Sound & Video. Click on the applet icon, and click "Volume Control...". Click on the "Playback" tab.
   3. Launch the application you wish to test and allow it to play sound.
   4. Check PulseAudio Volume Control's Playback tab and see if the application displays an entry while the application is (or should be) playing audio.

The result was that the application does not play audio and does list an entry in the Playback tab (C).

As stated in the guide, this means that: " the application is using PulseAudio but there is a problem, such as: a bug in PulseAudio, a problem with your ALSA kernel module or libraries, or your PCM/Master volume is muted."
Of course I checked that PCM/Master volume is not muted. So.l..

Hope this helps...

I experienced the same problem running with the same hardware. I have an inspiron 1501.

Zasq, I also installed the linuxant and hsfmodem drivers. I recently got fed up and did a clean install with kernel 2.6.28.11 and haven't upgraded my kernel yet until this is sorted out.

Perhaps it's a problem with the linuxant drivers? I haven't bothered to install the hsfmodem drivers yet... so for purposes of tracking down this bug i'll upgrade my kernel to 2.6.28.13 and see if i experience the same problem without the linuxant and hsf modem drivers.

Hi kafleur!
You won't believe it, but my sound system is okay now - well, so far... I installed the alsa-driver-linuxant from this homepage: http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/. The last time I installed the generic package with source (which didn't work out), now I installed the distribution specific binary package. You have to scroll down the page to find these precompiled packages. I installed it and this installation does not break my usb-devices!!! I understand you have jaunty 9.4 on amd64, so here is the link: http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/archive/alsa-driver-linuxant-1.0.20.3/alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.20.3_k2.6.28_13_generic_ubuntu_amd64.deb.zip
I'll install hsfmodem later, because I'm going to work now, but I'll let you know if it works! I never noticed the new precompiled packages. I suppose they didn't exist when I first installed the linuxant alsa-driver and the other one worked for me...
All the best,
zasq

After a week usb broke again. I use the older kernel 2.6.28-11-generic now - there everything used to work fine. I hope someone looks into this for the newer kernel...

deww,
Have you been able to test this on the latest Lucid Alpha? I'd be interested in your testing. If you still see this in Lucid, please run 'apport-collect -p linux 395012' so that all logging we need will be added to this bug.

Thanks!
