Bug Description

While I'm not sure how much effort will actually be put into resolving this bug, I sure hope someone high up in the chain of command will at least consider tackling this issue. This relates to front audio connections not being sensed/detected properly, which causes frustration for users of all levels of experience with K/Ubuntu.

In short, if a headphone is plugged into the front jack, sound is still heard through the speakers connected in back.

I believe, and I'm sure others will agree, that this lack of basic functionality turns many new users away from K/Ubuntu; and Linux in general. The same can be said for those out there who have read through many tutorials promising a fix, only to end up where they began. A papercut to be sure!

I am not ignorant to the possibility that the issue may stem from closed sourced hardware drivers/specs. However, the fact of the matter is that the end user doesn't care about any of that. All they know is that their front audio panel that works in Windows suddenly doesn't.

Unfortunately, this issue is present in many audio cards, embedded or otherwise. Perhaps others can add to this by listing specific model numbers.

One I know in particular is: hda-intel

Again, thank you for your time, hard work and dedication!

Not to mention a big Thanks for creating the One Hundred Paper Cuts initiative.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

This is a hardware specific problem, Not a papercut.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.

For resolution of the bug, kindly identify the projects affected and assign the bug to that project, otherwise the devs of the concerned project might not be notified of this problem. For more about finding the right package> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.

Junior [Delphicoder] ,
Have you tested this against the current Lucid Alpha? I'd be interested in the results of your testing. Please also run 'apport-collect -p linux 392431' so that all relevant logging will be attached to this bug.

Thanks!

This bug seems to describe the same problem as bug #414746. Although this bug is 2 month older I marked it as duplicate of 414746, because there is much more information.

@Junior: if you think your bug needs a separate discussion, feel free to unmark it again (using yellow exclamation mark after "Duplicate of bug 414746" top-right of this page)
