Bug Description

The computer will boot fine and the login screen looks fine. after log in the desktop will have a repeating vertical line every 1 inch and hundreds of horizontal lines with in each vertical line.
the mouse will be a white or black square. I'm unable to get out the the system with out a power cycle.

If i leave it frozen... I can log in to the computer remotely

I'm was running ubuntu 8.04 server i added desktop to it to make it easier to work with.

I have applied all of the steps from part A and B of the "How to: jaunty Intel Graphics Performance Guide" off unbuntu s web site.. safe configuration

Note: the guide says to inform you that I'm running "packages from this PPA" and it says to mention Launchpad for bug reporting... I do not know the answer to the unofficial mainline kernel... I believe that i have not updated the kernel manually..

I'm not trying to make the graphic powerful just work.. Is there a way to set it up for universal low color depth 1024 X 768 ?

Thanks Steve

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

Hi Steve,

I would recommend making liberal use of http://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ for installation support questions, they probably will be able to give better info than I, and will likely be able to provide quicker response.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
