I'm a complete dork. Somehow I missed the fact that libgl1-mesa-dri wasn't installed. Once I installed that it worked fine. Does this need to be linked as a dependency for libgl1-mesa-glx?

Based out the 'Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".' output in your .xsession-error files this is either a problem with your driver or a bad configuration in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

affects: compiz (Ubuntu) → xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
summary: - compiz doesn't work
+ Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

Your Xorg.0.log says this: (II) GLX: no usable GL providers found for screen 0

That message appears because the i965_dri.so file is missing from your system. Can you make sure the libgl1-mesa-dri package is installed and if so reinstall it?

Oops, looks like you fixed the problem while I was digging into your log files. :)

That package is not strictly required to be installed so it probably shouldn't be a dependency but it should have gotten installed somehow.
