Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-generic-pae

As I have 4 GB of RAM and I'm used to try the server kernel, and I decided to try this PAE kernel. Unfortunately, after usplash loads, the screen goes blank and small artefacts appear. When trying to log in to a console session, my display shows an "Input not supported" OSD, making the system unusable.

This bug was reported against the linux-meta package when it likely should have been reported against the linux package instead. We are automatically transitioning this to the linux kernel package so that the appropriate teams are notified and made aware of this issue.

If this bug really is a bug in the linux-meta package you can move it back to linux-meta and set the Status to Confirmed, or contact us on the #ubuntu-kernel channel on the FreeNode IRC server. Thanks.

affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

Sorry, I don't know what KMS is.

try:
sudo less /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf

if it shows:
options i915 modeset=X

where X is a number, then you have KMS installed. KMS does not work with PAE, either use another kernel or set KMS off by removing the file:
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf

So no, it seems I don't use KMS.

Hi Juan,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 391292

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
