Binary package hint: pidgin

Pidgin 2.5.5- stay in connecting... in Ubuntu 9.04(jaunty)-desktop 2.6.28-13-generic, Gnome - 2.26.1
after upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 (most reacent change)-> pidgin stay in connecting
(was 2 ..or 3 days when pidgin was connected in 9.04 )

This is fixed in Pidgin 2.5.7, but that is not yet in Ubuntu.

Yahoo changed their connection system. Go to Accounts, select account, click Modify. In the Advanced tab change your Paging server to cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com or 66.163.181.172 - they have been reported to work (and do so in my case).

PS: There is a Pidgin PPA where you can get the newer version. See http://www.pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/ for details.

This issue has been fixed upstream but not yet in Ubuntu. I'm marking this as a duplicate of bug 389322
