Bug Description

I've been running Ubuntu 9.04 on a HP dc5800 and am not getting any sound from the internal speaker.
Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu Karmic development release but this has not fixed the problem.

I've checked the volume output levels, and I have also tried all possible output devices using the sound preferences screen which is present in Gnome.

This problem is most likely a duplicate of bug #377554 but I didn't know how to use the ubuntu-bug program to attach the information to that bug.

Please don't attach info to that bug; we'll mark it a duplicate as necessary. Instead, please use "apport-collect -p alsa-base 390694" from a Terminal/Konsole/xterm.

I don't see the difference with the information I attached yesterday, but here it is.
Reading back my own report I noticed that 1 thing might be unclear: I mentioned the internal speaker, but i'm not referring to the pcspeaker, I am referring to the onboard sound card which is connected to that speaker.
Also, the sound is working in Windows.

More information: When I plugin some speakers to the output jacks on the back of the PC I had working sound immediately.

Hi Jelmer,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 390694

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the problem still exists in the latest kernel provided with Lucid at this moment. I've also installed the 2.6.34-rc1 kernel and confirmed that the problem exists there.

Short recap of the problem: Rear and front output jacks function properly, however, the internal speaker does not get enabled when there are speakers connected to either of the two output jacks.
