Bug Description

To choose an emblem for a file or directory in Nautilus one have to

1. Click the object (open context menu)
2. Choose the preferences dialog
3. Switch to "Emblems"
4. Scroll the collection
5. Select the emblem(s)
6. Click on "Close"

That seems awfully complex for a very useful and common operation like defining an emblem.

It would be my suggestion to additionally integrate a "set emblem" entry into the context menu, containing three recently used emblems which can be set with one click and perhaps an entry "more..." which opens the emblem dialog, mentioned above.

This could be combined with a shortcut to set the latest set emblem to a(nother) file.

You can go Edit > Backgrounds and Emblems > Emblems. From here you can drag emblems onto any folder or file without having to close the dialog.

Does that solve your problem? If it does could you please mark this bug's status as Invalid?

I did not know that. Thank you.

I am not sure. It is definitively quicker than the described way to set an emblem. However, I think it is not very intuitive.

Please don't think of my original post as bug or problem. It is a suggestion to improve Ubuntu/Nautilus. Since it is just my opinion, I think, we should let the report opened for the moment, for further discussion.

you can set the sidebar on emblem mode easily and use drag and drop on the right view, the action doesn't seem to be used often enough to justify adding complexity to the context menu which already has lot of entries

The problem seems to be finding the best way to do this. I will report a separate bug properly later.

There are three distinct interfaces for adding emblems, each with it's slight differences. I would suggest combining these into a single interface.
1) Edit > Backgrounds and Emblems > Emblems
2) 'Emblems' in the sidebar
3) Right-click > Properties > Emblems

Quickly, I can assume #2, the sidebar, is only used temporarily before being reverted back to something more generally useful. A "Backgrounds and Emblems" button could be added to the Basic tab of the Properties dialog, and so #3 could be removed.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix.

First of all, setting emblems in *not* a daily process for an average user.
Therefore Adding emblems item to the context menus is therefore just an overload of the context menu , which *should * only contain actions which are used very frequently.

Also, Emblems are available in the side pane, from where the emblems can be easily dragged and dropped on to content.
So there is no need for unnecessary duplication of the action in context menus or anywhere else. When side pane presents a fairly easy method to add emblems, There are No usability problems here.Hence not a papercut.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.
