configure command ends with "configure: error: ..."

I will install inkscape an my ubuntu 64 bit system. But the ./configure command ends with
the message:

 "configure: error: libpng >= 1.2 is needed to compile inkscape".

So compiling, installation and further work is not posible.

i managed to compile Inkscape. I did not remember exactly how, but on of the sections were suitable for my system.
