Bug Description
Issue : by default, 4 virtual desktops are available. Users (errr... ok, practically, it means "my wife"... ;) ) may perform unwanted a virtual desktop changes (my wife often does... ;) ), and be confused by what seems "applications which disappeared from the task bar", as they don't even know that virtual desktops *exist*.
Paper cut : my suggestion is to make a clear visual distinction between virtual desktop, so that each one is associated with a different colour, that would be used for the menu and task bars for example, and displayed in the virtual desktop selector as well (each square would be coloured).

While it has merit, I don't believe this would be an *easy fix* and thus is not a paper cut.
I do agree it's far too easy to loose your windows. Scrolling through workspaces while hovering over the desktop will be disabled in Karmic, will that help you wife?
