Bug Description
Binary package hint: grub2
Background images for grub2 only display correctly if they have the same resolution as the grub gfxmode.
If the image dimensions are larger than gfxmode, the image is truncated. If the image dimensions are smaller than gfxmode, the image appears in the top-left of the screen and the remainder of the background is black.
Is there any way that grub can be made to resize or tile the image instead?

looking though http://<email address hidden> /msg07998. html there seems to have been some patches to allow sending options to background_image such as,
background_image --mode=scale <image>
but they don't seem to have reached svn as far as i can see for whatever reason. background_image doesnt seem to take anything apart from the actual image file at the moment, i dont know if its not being done or just being done a different way
